Found in the Wilderness
Preacher: Melanie Goodway, on 08/09/2019, duration: 0:37

Finding yourself in a Wilderness, a place where you feel alone and desolate, is not an uncommon thing. It can often come after times of great excitement. God made the Wilderness as well as the Garden of Eden. The Wilderness is a journey, not a destination. God is with you as you travel through it; He will not abandon you there. How you react in your wilderness is important. Hold on to God's promises, He is a faithful God.

What do you see?
Go and explore the land I am giving you.
Preacher: Richard Brown, on 01/09/2019, duration: 0:36

Richard looks at the story of when the Israelites reached the Promised Land for the first time, when Moses sent twelve spies to explore the land. Why did this generation fail to enter the land? Richard explains that it was because ten of the spies, even though they had been taught the promise, had not caught the promise in the hearts. Consequently all they could see were giants. Joshua and Caleb on the other hand caught the prophetic word in their hearts and were ready to step into everything God had planned for them. What is God saying to us? What do we perceive in our spirits?

You Say - I Believe
Seeing ourselves as God sees us
Preacher: Richard Brown, on 07/07/2019, duration: 0:40

Richard heard a song on the radio which caught his attention. It talked about the importance of listening to what God says about us, not what we might think about ourselves. This is vital if we are to take church outside the four walls of a building. How can we offer life to a broken world if we continue to believe the lies that Satan says about us? It's time to develop a lifestyle of You Say, I Believe.

Walk on the water and get into the boat
Mark 6:45-52
Preacher: Richard Brown, on 26/05/2019, duration: 0:33

Richard looks at the story of when Jesus walks on the water. Rather than consider what most people think about, which is when Peter gets out of the boat to walk on the water too, we consider the importance of getting into the boat with those who are going through a storm. Storms can happen even when we do what's right. In today's story, the disciples followed exactly what Jesus had asked them to do, but found themselves in difficulty.

Esther Part 5 - When we walk with God
For such a time as this
Preacher: Richard Brown, on 07/04/2019, duration: 0:35

Today Richard brings the story of Esther to a conclusion. Now that Haman's plot is uncovered there seems no hope for him. However, are things much better for the Jews as Xerxes command had been signed with his signet ring and was now irrevocable? Richard explains how by walking with God, Esther and Mordecai come up with a plan that both maintains honour for the king but allows the Jews to protect themselves. As for Haman, there was no mercy for him. However, this is not the case for us. When we come before the King, we always find mercy.

There is much we can learn from the way king Xerxes behaves in dealing with his so called irrevocable law, observing how Esther handled herself in the harem of king Xerxes, and how Mordecai invested the earlier years of his life helping Esther to become the woman of good character that she was. In this part of the story God is still putting things in place ready for what will ultimately become the rescue of his people.

It is important to note that this whole story takes place away from the land of Israel and there is no mention of God from beginning to end. Again, everything with this young man seemed all good, apart from one thing, his riches – that was his 'but'. Interestingly even though the young ruler obeyed all of the commandments, he felt he needed to ask Jesus what else he lacked. Why did he ask this? It is because by the Holy Spirit he was feeling what God was feeling about his 'but', i.e. the riches in his life had taken priority over following Jesus. Even so, Jesus had genuine love for him.

Sometimes we don’t realise that there are areas in our lives that have become fallow. Richard parallels this with his recent experience of needing physiotherapy to resolve a shoulder injury. It was during this time that he learned that his muscles had become very stiff and needed exercise – he thought he was fit. Often when we think we’re doing OK, the Holy Spirit points to areas in our lives that need some work.

Preacher: Richard Brown, on 07/02/2016, duration: 0:44

Today Pastor Richard explores the story of Ahab and Jehoshaphat when they agree to go to battle against the Kingdom of Aram. Ahab’s prophets all agreed that they should go to battle, but only the prophet Micaiah spoke the true words from God. The big question though is why did Jehoshaphat who was a good and godly king still go to war when he clearly knew this was not right? How do we respond when God’s will disagrees with our own?

Peter and Cornelius - Part 2
Building bridges, tearing down walls
Preacher: Richard Brown, on 10/01/2016, duration: 0:36

Today Pastor Richard continues looking at the story of Peter and Cornelius. We see two people come together who ordinarily would have nothing to do with each other, although for this to happen fully Peter had to make some changes. God may well bring people across our paths that are not part of our normal social circle but where we see God at work we should be willing to reach out with the gospel and make changes in ourselves where necessary. As we put ourselves out, the Holy Spirit moves in to do his work of power.

Preacher: Richard Brown, on 03/01/2016, duration: 0:39

At the start of 2016 Pastor Richard encourages us all to dream. Throughout scripture God has made his purposes know through dreams and visions. In the story of Peter and Cornelius they are brought together by God speaking to each of them through visions as they prayed. Often when we pray we fight against such daydreaming. Perhaps it’s time to let our imaginations go as we pray, allowing God to paint pictures in our minds of his Kingdom purposes.

Peter and John were on a mission; they were on their way to a prayer meeting. Suddenly they are presented with an opportunity to be Jesus to someone who needed healing. What did they do? Firstly, they stopped and paid attention to the man in need. Secondly, they gave what they had which was the power of Jesus to heal. Finally, they took the man by hand and took him into the temple. Letting go is often sacrificial, but when we do we can be sure that this will bring blessings.

In our first meeting after the summer holidays Pastor John presents a keynote preach on ensuring that our Christian lives do not become dull and mediocre. Comparing our lives with a blade used for wet shaving, John explains that blades rarely become blunt before being discarded, rather they get dirty with facial residue. If the blades are cleaned properly then you get more life from them. This is much like our lives in God that become tainted by the world and hence lose their sharpness.

Jesus Christ Came to Save Sinners

Preacher: John Maskell, on 06/04/2014, duration: 0:37

Continuing in the book of 1 Timothy, John expands on verse 15 "Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners" and reminds us that God's love is expressed in how he sent Jesus to die for our sins and that our responsibility is to repent. John talks in particular about the practice of homosexuality, explaining that even though the world has grown to accept and embrace it, the Bible’s position on this is clear, it is sin.

The Purpose of God's Law - Part 2
The Nature of Sin
Preacher: John Maskell, on 16/03/2014, duration: 0:46

John continues from where he left off last week looking at 1 Timothy 1:5-11 and looks carefully at what Paul has to say about sin. Even though Paul lists several kinds of sinful acts, he does not try to classify them into more serious or less serious sins – basically anything that is contrary to God’s word is sin. Drawing also from scriptures in Romans 7, we see that the sinful behaviours are actually the fruit of the sinful nature that resides within us all. Paul pleads by saying “Who will free me from this from this life dominated by sin? Thank God, the answer is Jesus Christ".

Preacher: John Maskell, on 09/03/2014, duration: 0:39

This week John continues the study into 1 Timothy looking specifically at verses 6-11. John explains how the Law was only able to point out the wrong in people’s lives but was not able to deal with the root cause which is sin. He explained how the Pharisees had over time corrupted the Law by adding all kinds of extra rules and regulations which were not from God. So when Paul comes along and teaches salvation by grace, this creates a real problem for the Jews of the early church.

He doesn't force his word on us. When you sow seed there are no guarantees. There are many side effects to sin. When God sows the seed, he does it in what seems an indiscriminate way. He doesn't reveal himself at every catastrophe. Every day we have a choice about how we let Gods seed, his word, affect our lives.

Sometimes the teachings of Jesus are hard to accept. In John 6 Jesus taught his followers about 'eating his flesh'. Whist this was a figure of speech, it offended many of his followers who subsequently left him. Sometimes, we don't like the demands that God places on our lives; we don't like to requirements of righteousness. What are we to do? Are we too going to walk away from God? Peter certainly was not going to abandon Jesus, after all, to whom would he go?
