Standing in the Future
The Importance of Prophesy
Preacher: Richard Penska, on 22/06/2025, duration: 0:34

Richard Penska looks at the importance of the prophetic within church life. Being prophetic is more than just listening to God, it is also about how we communicate what we have heard to others, and how we ourselves respond to the prophetic word. As God reveals his will for us, both individually and as a church, it is helpful to describe what we see, and then be intentional in the steps we need to take to realise God's word.

They invite Jesus to stay with them at which point he reveals himself to them. That whole encounter causes these two lost disciples to rejoin their story.

Moses Part 15 - Don't strike the rock
Preacher: Richard Brown, on 06/10/2024, duration: 0:32

In Numbers 20:1-13 we read that God told Moses to 'Speak' to the rock, but Moses 'Struck' the rock, and earned God's displeasure. This is in contrast to a previous event some 38 years earlier (recorded in Exodus 17:1-7), where Moses was told to 'Strike' the rock. Richard unpacks much of the symbolism around these two seemingly similar events to explain why God, being so displeased with Moses, would no longer allow him to lead the people into the Promised Land.

Preacher: Richard Brown, on 12/11/2023, duration: 0:37

Richard shares the 5th 'I Am' statement of Jesus from John 11. He considers this by looking at the story of Lazarus's death and resurrection from Martha's perspective. She believes in Jesus for sure, but when it comes to raising Lazarus from the dead - will he actually do it? Even when our faith in Jesus is strong, sometimes it is still hard to believe for miracles in the here and now.

God always has a heart for salvation, but it is clear that Jonah did not share God's heart. He was happy being a prophet within his own nation, but as soon as he is called to go outside of Israel into a pagan country, Jonah runs. It's good to have passion for the church, but this must not take the place of passion for God's mission and to see the gospel taken outside of our four walls. Nehemiah Part 1 - A Broken Heart
Nehemiah 1 - God says: Enough! I's time for change
Preacher: Richard Brown, on 12/09/2021, duration: 0:29

Richard begins the Nehemiah series in chapter one where he hears news of the sad state of the Jewish nation. The walls are in ruins and the people have lost their way. Nehemiah's heart is broken and he humbly approaches God to make himself available to help restore God's people. How do we react to the broken world around us. The city walls were meant to protect God's people and maintain their purity. Without these walls the nation had become like the pagan nations around them. Is the church simply becoming more like the world. God says "Enough, it's time for change".

The Simplicity of the Message of the Cross
The man on the middle cross said I can come
Preacher: Richard Brown, on 08/08/2021, duration: 0:22

Richard draws from a message delivered by Alistair Begg who challenges us to think about what we might say when standing at the gates of heaven. In 1 Corinthians 1 we are told that the message of the cross is foolish to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved it is the power of God. When we forget the message of the cross we can slip into a Faith plus Works mentality - "I can enter Heaven because I..." The simplicity of the message of the cross is that it is nothing to do with what I have done, it is all because of what Jesus has done.

In this first session we learn about how clumsy Joseph is as he shares about the dreams he has been having, and as a result gets himself into a lot of trouble. We all make mistakes when we are learning but because relationships within the family were so bad, the brothers show no grace or patience, apart from Jacob who holds his matter in his heart. Good relationships with one another are key for creating a healthy environment for gifts to grow.

To do this we have to let go of the shallow, the safety of what we have always done. In this time of the Coronavirus, many of us are probably longing for things to return to normal. However, God wants us to embrace the deep.

I feel what God feels
Preacher: Richard Brown, on 19/06/2016, duration: 0:35

This is the second part in which Pastor Richard talks about the 'buts' of life. This time we explore the story of the Rich Young Ruler. Again, everything with this young man seemed all good, apart from one thing, his riches – that was his 'but'. Interestingly even though the young ruler obeyed all of the commandments, he felt he needed to ask Jesus what else he lacked. Why did he ask this? It is because by the Holy Spirit he was feeling what God was feeling about his 'but', i.e. the riches in his life had taken priority over following Jesus. Even so, Jesus had genuine love for him.

God feels what we feel
Preacher: Richard Brown, on 12/06/2016, duration: 0:37

Today Pastor Richard starts the first of a 3 part series centred around big 'buts'. Whilst the title might be a bit humorous or tongue in cheek, it's actually a very important message. Our lives are often full of good things, apart from one thing we would love to change. Perhaps a habit, or maybe a past hurt. Everything is great, but... In this first of 3 messages, Richard explores the story of Naaman - everything was great ...but he had leprosy.

Two criminals hung there either side of Jesus, each responding to him in radically different ways. Only one of these criminals received mercy from God; it was all in the response then, and it is all in the response now.

Break up your fallow ground

Preacher: Richard Brown, on 20/03/2016, duration: 0:43

Today Pastor Richard explores the scripture in Hosea 10:12 where God tells the Israel to break up their fallow ground. Sometimes we don’t realise that there are areas in our lives that have become fallow. Richard parallels this with his recent experience of needing physiotherapy to resolve a shoulder injury. It was during this time that he learned that his muscles had become very stiff and needed exercise – he thought he was fit. Often when we think we’re doing OK, the Holy Spirit points to areas in our lives that need some work.

We all understand that we need to let go of things that are bad for us, things that get in the way of our walk with God. However, sometimes God requires us to let go of things that are good because God wants to move us on to other things. If we don't let go what God is no longer in, those things that we once good can become a stumbling block.

The Purpose of God's Law - Part 2
The Nature of Sin
Preacher: John Maskell, on 16/03/2014, duration: 0:46

John continues from where he left off last week looking at 1 Timothy 1:5-11 and looks carefully at what Paul has to say about sin. Even though Paul lists several kinds of sinful acts, he does not try to classify them into more serious or less serious sins – basically anything that is contrary to God’s word is sin. Drawing also from scriptures in Romans 7, we see that the sinful behaviours are actually the fruit of the sinful nature that resides within us all. Paul pleads by saying “Who will free me from this from this life dominated by sin? Thank God, the answer is Jesus Christ".

John explains how the Law was only able to point out the wrong in people’s lives but was not able to deal with the root cause which is sin. He explained how the Pharisees had over time corrupted the Law by adding all kinds of extra rules and regulations which were not from God. So when Paul comes along and teaches salvation by grace, this creates a real problem for the Jews of the early church.

Why do those who love God and live righteous lives suffer, whilst the ungodly seem to be blessed? Where is God in all of this?
